Book Review: We Were Liars by E Lockhart

WeWereLiarsJohnny, Mirren, Gat, and Cadence are friends formed by the bonds of summer vacation. After a mysterious accident that Cadence can’t remember she is plagued by horrible headaches and possibly addicted to pain killers. Sure that a summer away will help her memory, Cady begs to return to their family vacation home so she can reconnect with her friends.

This book was wonderful. I loved the plot and the story. The tag hooked me “If anyone ask you how it ends, just LIE”. The only thing that stopped this from being a favorite for me was the language.

There is some beautiful imagery in this book. How the author describes headaches is amazing. This is one sample of the main character describing her friend:

“Johnny, he is bounce, effort, and snark. Back then he would hand our Barbies by the necks or shoot us with guns made by Lego.”

Recommended Grades: 10-up
Genre: Mystery
Overall Opinion: Recommended if you can ignore F Bombs (there are way too many for my taste)
